As1170 Part 1 Manual
For more videos covering Structural Concepts and Design. This video covers the definition of a load/action, which is a force acting on a structure. The video then looks at the typical loads and their corresponding Australian standards. The first load is the dead load, which is comprised of self-weight of a member, and superimposed dead load. The second load is the live load. Details of these loads can be found in AS1170.1 Part 1: Permanent, imposed and other actions. The next loads include wind load, snow and ice and Earthquake.
Details of these loads can be found in AS1170.2 Part 2: Wind actions. AS1170.3 Part 3: Snow and ice actions and AS1170.4 Part 4: Earthquake actions in Australia. The final part of the video looks at the difference between a static and dynamic load as well as the difference between a vertical and lateral load. Introduction to Structural Concepts and Design looks at how to quantify loads acting on a structure. The main loads that are looked at in this course include dead and live load, wind load, earthquake loading and snow loading.Introduction to Structural Concepts and Design looks at how to quantify loads acting on a structure. Description
Sets out data and procedures for determining earthquake loads on structures and their components, and also minimum detailing requirements for structures. Domestic structures are covered in an Appendix.
Scope
This Standard sets out procedures for determining earthquake actions and detailing requirements for structures and components to be used in the design of structures. It also includes requirements for domestic structures.
Importance level 1 structures are not required to be designed for earthquake actions.
The following structures are outside the scope of this Standard:
- (a) High-risk structures.
- (b) Bridges.
- (c) Tanks containing liquids.
- (d) Civil structures including dams and bunds.
- (e) Offshore structures that are partly or fully immersed.
- (f) Soil-retaining structures.
- (g) Structures with first mode periods greater than 5 s.
This Standard does not consider the effect on a structure of related earthquake phenomena such as settlement, slides, subsidence, liquefaction or faulting.
Notes:
- For structures in New Zealand, see NZS 1170.5.
- For earth-retaining structures, see AS 4678.
